What is “rockabilly”? Why would anyone want to be identified with rockabilly? What’s the appeal of things called rockabilly? I was looking through my referral logs and found this post on craigslist (Austin). I think the poster presents a pretty good summation of what “rockabilly” means - I agree with what he says it’s about.

OK….I’ve read all the crap and now It’s time to take your bait. I’m what you may label as Rockabilly. I have been since…oh…birth. I haven’t always had a pompadour or worn my jeans cuffed, but that’s only a “style”. Much like hip hop douchebags wear baggy jerseys, shorts that are 12 sizes too big, bling and sideways ball caps. (maybe the caps are straight and their heads are crooked. I’m not sure). It’s just a style of clothing. Rockabilly folks, at least the ones that aren’t posers, are more into the LIFEstyle than the style.

It’s about embracing a time when America was strong and free. It’s about music before it became all about “buss a cap in some bitch ass” and “pimpin’ my ho’s”. It’s about the cars from an era when a man was a man and chrome was king. Cars that would last more than 5 years. (how many 30+ year old Hondas do you see on the road still?)

It’s about pride and honor and stepping up to the plate and being a solid American, the way it was in 1953. A man is a man and women can be strong and show their beauty by getting dolled up in vintage dresses. They don’t have to be whores to get attention, like the pop culture sluts today. Which brings me to my next point…. You said “have you seen their bitches”. First, if I ever catch you calling my girl a bitch, I’ll mail pieces of you to your family. I don’t think you want to find out what tattooed knuckles taste like. That’s another part of being a solid man. I’ll defend my woman and her honor, the way she would defend me and mine.

Go ahead. Live whatever lifestyle you like, but remember… You laugh at me because I’m different. I laugh at you because you’re all the same.
